Students go on rampage over delayed supper

07 July 2015, 15:17 Makena Laban

Bungoma - Learning was disrupted and property worth thousands of shillings destroyed after students of Tande Secondary school in Malava went on rampage protesting delay in preparation of their supper last night.

The school Principal, John Lusamamba said he received information about the rampage from the boarding master at around 5.00AM.

“There was delay in preparation of their supper yesterday evening. The school is facing financial crisis as we owe suppliers a lot of money and debtors are on our neck. We have to beg the suppliers before they deliver the food,” Lusamamba said.

Lusamamba said the students have been sent home as they look for a solution adding that window panes, dining hall and kitchen were vandalized.

Malava MP, Malulu Injendi blamed the former management for leaving the school with accumulated debts which have made it difficult for the school to function.

“The school is facing financial crisis which needs all education stakeholders to intervene as the problem has been there for long,” Injendi said.

He assured all stakeholders that the school will not collapse as they are planning to hold fundraisers to repay the debts.

Herbert Shitoshe, a security officer at the school said he saw around 50 students running towards him with machetes and axe.

“I had to run for my life as they would have killed me with the crude weapons they were carrying. They were supposed to take Ugali and beef or sukuma but there was a delay and that made them wild,” Shitoshe said.
