Nyeri - A fourth year student at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology has succumbed to injuries he sustained after his lover set him on fire inside his rental room at Kamakwa Estate in Nyeri town.
Residents said the man, identified as Denis Njenga, had been seen with his 45-year-old lover in the room before the inferno.
The middle-aged woman who had engaged in an illicit affair with the young man has since been arrested and is in police custody.
Residents said they saw Esther Njoki leaving before the fire started. The fire destroyed beddings, cooking wares and books in the bedsitter.
She was arraigned in a Nyeri court Thursday in connection to the incident, but the charges were not read out to her as the investigating officer requested for more time to accomplish investigations.
The investigating officer, Peter Orwa requested the court to detain Njoki at Nyeri police station for one week in order for him to complete investigations.
“I need time to conduct further investigations and collect specimen from the deceased's body for analysis. I also have several witnesses who are yet to record their statements,” said Orwa in a sworn affidavit.
Njoki, who is a civil servant, is said to have been the last person seen with the deceased before the incident.
It is said that the two love birds were taking beer together at a local pub in the Estate before they returned to the room at around 4am.
Few minutes later, the fire started and the deceased was rushed to Outspan Hospital for treatment with a third-degree burn.
