Security at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday will be at an all time high when arch rivals AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia face off.
After a meeting held on Friday morning at the Nyayo National Stadium boardroom, KPL Security committee chairman retired whistle blower GMT Otieno said that they do not want to take anything to chance as far as security is concerned.
“We all recall the sad incident in Egypt a few weeks ago when over 70 fans died when fans clashed. Also here in the country in 2010 seven fans died after a stampede on October 23rd when Gor and AFC played. We are taking security issues very strictly”, Otieno said speaking to the press after the meeting.
Plastic bottles will not be allowed inside the Stadium and frisking will start right from the gates. Only ticket holders will be allowed inside.
The Stadium will also be clearly demarcated as to where Gor and AFC fans will sit. The sitting area above gate 6 which is common with Gor Mahia’s “Away Branch” will be cleaned off and no one will sit there. It will separate the fans from both sides with Gor fans sitting to the left of it while AFC fans will sit on the left.
Officers will be deployed to ensure that the sitting arrangement is not broken.
Tickets for the match start selling on Saturday morning and they will be available at selected Ticket masters outlets though there had been a rift between the ticket handlers and Gor Mahia after Gor wanted to change to Wells fargo but it was too late.
Tickets will be sold at the Hope Centre, City Stadium, 20th Century, Kenya Cinema, Mumbai Plaza Gikomba, AFC Leopards Kawangware branch office and Buruburu.
VIP Tickets will be going at 500 shillings while terrace tickets will sell at 200 shillings. Gates to the Stadium open at 11am and close immediately the match starts. 24,000 tickets have been printed for the match; 2,500 for VIP and 22,500 for terraces.
