Thika - A street boy narrowly escaped mob justice on Thursday after snatching a mobile phone from a lady in Thika town.
The boy who was beaten senseless was rescued after the intervention of empathetic members of the public.
The mob complained that street urchins have turned to be a nuisance and are snatching goodies from shoppers coming from supermarkets near the bus park.
Recently, an intense crackdown on street children was carried in the area where more than 600 street urchins were arrested.
Some were repatriated back to their respective homes while others were taken to children care centers.
Area Children Officer, Rebecca Kariuki, validated that street children have increased and that some have been engaging in illegal activities but said that another crackdown will be carried out soon to wipe them out.
She however said a policy is needed in addressing the issue and involve all stakeholders including parents.
