Still no September pay for teachers
17 October 2015, 09:17
Nairobi - Teachers are yet to be paid their September salaries it has emerged despite the government being ordered to do so by the Industrial Court.
By close of business Friday, the Teachers Service Commission TSC had yet to remit the salaries.
Efforts to reach the Commission leadership by News24 bore no fruit.
"We are yet to receive our salaries and we wonder why,"a Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT official said in private.
Teachers had been promised payment of their salaries if they returned to class immediately and resumed duty two week ago following a 5 week strike over the non payment of a 50/60% pay increase by the courts.
There was no word yet from Union leadership over the matter.
The government had refused to pay teachers stating that it did not have the resources to do so, a fact that was refuted by the unions and teachers themselves.
The revelation came a day after a teacher hanged himself over the non-payment of the teachers salaries.
Patrick Irungu killed himself Tuesday in protest over the non payment of salaries.
