Speaker urges public to monitor devolution

Murang'a - The speaker of Murang’a County Assembly, Nduati Kariuki has called the public to help them in effecting their oversight role by attending and participating in forums convened to enlighten public on devolution.
The speaker expressed concerns that Murang’a residents were shying away from the forums which are meant to discuss various issues affecting the County under the new system of governance.
Speaking at the Assembly grounds during a meeting called to discuss the Murang’a County Assembly Draft Strategic Plan 2014-2018, Kariuki said dialogue was the "key thing if the new system of governance was to succeed and prosper development in the country".
“It’s only through public engagements that we shall succeed; we cannot afford to have policies passed by the assembly without the input of members of the public who are expected to benefit from them. That is why am asking the public to attend and air their views during various meetings that we shall be convening,” Kariuki said.
He further pointed out that the idea behind the strategic plan was spurred by the challenges that the MCAs encountered when they assumed office early last year.
The strategic plan is aimed at finding ways of strengthening legislative function of the County Assembly, developing the capacity of members to conduct oversight role, establishing a strong administrative structure and establishing and maintaining meaningful engagement with the public.
It will be officially launched after the public inputs are added to the draft.
