Kiambu - The newly elected Kiambu County Assembly speaker, Gathii Irungu has promised to offer a humble and consultative leadership.
Gathii, in his gratitude speech after he was declared winner of the hotly contested seat, was however quick to say that he should not be compared to his predecessor.
“I am aware of the recent events in this house. I however do not want you to compare me with anyone. I shall offer a humble, consultative, fair, just and independent leadership,” Gathii pledged.
During the elections, he floored five other candidates including 32-year-old Julie Waweru who is a Kenyatta University student.
Gathii garnered 58 votes after the second round of the election. During the first round of the contest, no candidate attained two thirds of the total votes cast as required by the assembly standing orders.
Kiambu county assembly has a total of 87 members, including 67 elected and 20 nominated members.
Getting the speaker’s seat is an achievement and a political milestone for him considering that he was contesting the Ruiru parliamentary seat in the last general elections which he lost to Esther Nyambura Gathogo.
“I shall try to balance the conflicting interests between the different organs of government of the county with the understanding that all these organs are geared towards betterment of the Kiambu citizens,” added Gathii, who is also a human rights lawyer.
“I shall endeavour to always look after the welfare of all the 87 Honorable members by all means possible. That is my main mandate and I shall be the face of the Assembly to the whole world and implement all the agenda I supplied you with,” said Gathii.
The seat fell vacant after the former speaker, Nick Ndichu was impeached by the MCAs on allegations of abuse of office.
He was also accused of embezzling more than KES 500 000 during a foreign trip to Brazil.
The motion to remove Ndichu from office was supported by 69 members against 13 members who stood by him.
