Solution to power blackouts in Nyanza

01 June 2012, 12:59 Alfred Onyango

Power blackouts, a major phenomena experienced in South Nyanza might soon sink into oblivion after Kenya electricity transmission company ( KETRACO)  vowed to construct a power sub-station at Awendo.  Currently there is only one sub-station in Kisii which supplies Kisii, Homabay, Nyamira and Migori districts and a hitch at the station causes a total darkness in the region.

Eng. Kennedy Nengo and the regional coordinator Rosemary Oduor said the project will commence soon and ask the region's residents to be patient KETRACO addresses the issue. He also added that the company was focusing on efficient service delivery to the people.
Over the years business people in this region had to dig deep into their pockets to cater for the high energy cost since on several occasions they were forced to use diesel engines to produce power thus stalling the development in the region.

Elsewhere Awendo town council mayor Johnson Owiro  has assured the town's residence that the market construction will start immediately the pending case is determined. He expelled fears that KES. 200m had been squandered and confirmed the money was still intact. He asked his fellow politicians to keep politics away from development.

Two months agon the towns dwellers had protested the delayed of commencement of work and accused the council of embezzling funds meant for the project. However the mayor said some people had gone to court claiming the land set a side for the market was their's thus halting the whole process. For now the traders in the area have to work in deplorable conditions as they wait for the two fighting parties to come to amicable solution.
