Social media must not's

Nairobi - I can count in my hands how many platforms I am on not
because they are not that many but just because I am an analogue type of
person. There is just something popping up every other day. There’s Instagram,
then there’s a prototype of Instagram, then there’s that one that is the
competitor and you find one person on all of them and you wonder where they get
I am woman enough to admit that they really are good for
business, what the sales’ personnel could lie or represent about your product
without your knowledge before is instantly curable as long as you have social
media. They just make everything so much easier and manageable.
Some people on the other hand are still teenagers when it
comes to social media and their lives. Social media practically runs their
lives. They are on Tinder, to manage dating. Then they are on
Facebook to still manage dating and post every other personal thing about
themselves, their dog, the neighbor’s dog, what their mom did or said last
night, the niece who we spotted on the family tree, the cousin who just flew in
from the diaspora; you name it and they will find a place for it on the
You all have never heard this rule? Keep your income, sex
life, your business, your family and your next move private. Your business is
your business. Learn the art of surprising people once in a while.
You got a job interview tomorrow, Facebook does not need to
know about it, nor do your Instagram followers need to see what you are going
to wear to that interview. It is better to just surprise them when you already
have the job. You have no idea what the power of spite or bad mouthing can have
against you not getting that job.
If you are meeting that new person who wants to be your
beau, we do not need to know about it. It is good to have a baby or even eat
that good meal once in a while but some of you really do know how to overdo it.
Even when the child spits we have to know about it. The child will feel better
if they grow up and they do not have to encounter every one of their pictures
on the internet. Save them some of that grace!
What about advertising your arguments or squabbles.
It is good when you find out that man you are in a
relationship with is already someone’s husband, but you will not find me
putting up my relationship status on Facebook, there are just easier ways of
finding out if someone is a creep. I do not need to gush over the bread he bought
or the candle he was able to light without burning the curtains in the name of
romance because that is just my business. There are people doing bigger and
better yours is just a small speck yet you feel everyone would feel envy. They
Do not go and blast someone on the internet because you also
look like an idiot for being with them. You are calling into question your own
better judgment! Think about that when you want to press that post button. Are
they a clown or are they something good. If they are a clown, you are also a
Do not air your arguments or disagreement with your spouse
or friend, or the frienemies. Whichever it is. You also look like a fool.
Social media is good but for keeping in touch and making
money. In my opinion! You can always do what you want because we lack good
comedy in Kenya and we need people like you to make it interesting for the rest
