Nairobi - Kuresoi south Member of Parliament Zakayo Cheruiyot, has said that social media has become a curse to this country and its young people.
Cheruiyot said that social media platforms were meant to unite the society but in Kenya they have been used to divide the society even more.
Speaking Friday in his constituency, Cheruiyot, said that social media has done more harm than god to the nation and has turned Kenyans youths and the middle class into tribal and political hate mongers.
“In the western world the social media is used mainly in uniting and bringing the society together, learning new things and transferring important, educative and relevant information but in Kenya things are different because our young people and especially the middle class have turned social media into a battle field among tribes,” he said.
He added that it was saddening the young people and the majority middle class who should be at the forefront of fighting tribalism and negative ethnicity are the ones propagating it.
“The middle class and the young and educated Kenyans are the only people who could have saved this country from the chains of tribalism but it is sad because instead of doing so they have made it even worse,” he said.
