Slums get rechargeable electric meters

31 December 2012, 13:12Wangui Joseph

KPLC Nyeri branch jointly with World Bank has launched a three-month project of supplying electricity to Witemere slum in Nyeri.

Speaking in Nyeri town, Senior Customer Relations Officer Irene Wanjohi said the project is in the company’s vision of reaching and empowering the common mwananchi.

“Witemere residents will have to pay KES1 000 each household for connection. Then they will be using the prepaid meters,” said Irene.

She confirmed that about 300 people from the shunt have registered for the project.

“We are partnering with World Bank in slum upgrading by use of what we have and what we can provide,” she said.

The Witemere people will be purchasing tokens to recharge the prepaid meter in order to get the service.

Irene mentioned that the least purchasable token goes for KES100, and also a monthly standing fee of KES134.

“BPower supply will facilitate even the creation of job opportunities ideas,” she said.

“Kenya power now gives people power to control electricity consumption. Paper bills, disconnections and the hassles of reconnections are things you will never hear with the use of  the prepaid meter,” explained Irene, adding that every kenyan deserves power.

At the same time, she pleaded with the public to be the watchdog and keeper of their equipment as well as reporting any theft cases they come across.

“Public is our partners. They are the first keeper of public utilities before the authority comes in,” she noted.
