Nyeri - Police in Nyeri Sunday arrested six suspected robbers who were hiding at a lodging in Ruring’u estate.
Area OCPD, John Leshimpilo, said the gang was raided on Saturday night at 2.00am following a tip off from the estate residents.
He said police officers swiftly went to the scene and pounced on the group. They were sleeping in a single room with their car parked outside.
During the raid, Leshimpilo said they recovered some weapons including a homemade gun, two rounds of ammunition, two swords, a bolt and pad lock cutter.
Six crates of beer, three pairs of safari boots, some clothes and meat blenders among other items which were also suspected to be stolen property were also recovered during the raid.
The gang is believed to be behind a series of robberies that have been taking place within the region.
Some of the suspects were identified by members of the public as residents of the estate, according to the police chief.
Leshimpilo called on residents to continue volunteering information that can assist the police to arrest more suspects.
He said after investigations, the suspects will be arraigned in court for trial.
He added that it was astonishing that the owner of the car, which was allegedly used by the suspects to perpetrate crime and operates in Nyeri town as a cab, was among the suspects.
Speaking at Nyeri central police station, area sub-County commissioner, John Marete, commended the residents for their collaboration with the police.
“The thugs were using the homemade gun to terrorise businessmen in town,” said Marete.
The incidence occurred just a fortnight after two houses in the same estate were broken into and some electronics stolen.
