Migori - Sorrow and fright engulfed a village in Rongo trading centre in Migori County Tuesday after two enraged sons murdered their father following a dispute over land.
A somber mood was evident at Kameji Village after news of the bizarre murder of the old man spread.
The two siblings, 27-year-old Joseph Ogutu and his 12-year-old brother allegedly hacked their father to death after their earlier attempt to poison his food failed to yield the desired results when they reportedly realised that the toxic substances was taking longer than expected.
Ogutu, the eldest son, was suspected to have been the major player in the saga later confessed that the father had caused the family a lot of trouble and they wanted him to die.
Ogutu complained that the deceased mistreated his younger siblings and was disrespectful to them.
Close family members confirmed that the two sons had engaged their father in fights the previous day before they decided to end his life.
Kennedy Ochieng, a nephew to the deceased, said Ogutu went round the village that day reporting the murder of his father.
“The young man came to my house and reported that he had found his father lying unconscious in his house and it seemed like somebody had killed him,” reported Ochieng.
Villagers got suspicious of the two sons who initially denied links to the murder only to confess to the crime after they were hard pressed to explain the circumstances that led to the death of their father.
Enraged villagers who had gathered at the homestead almost lynched the suspect before he was rescued and whisked by a local administrator to the local police station.
Sources said the sons killed their father in his house, which he shared with four of the younger kids.
Police said the two brothers confessed to killing their dad saying they hacked him using stones and a knife.
They also confessed to using poison to kill him prior to hacking him.
Rongo OCPD, Catherine Irungu said the body bore stab wounds that may have been inflicted using a sharp object.
Irungu confirmed the eldest son had already been arrested and was being interrogated while his wife was assisting in similar investigations.
