Webuye - Five students from Yalusi Secondary school in Webuye West Constituency, Bungoma County have been found pregnant by the school administration.
The institution Principal, Mary Wanyama confirmed that the five girls - two in form four, two in form three and one in form one - found pregnant blamed their fellow male students and neighbours for the pregnancies.
“We were shocked to find out that the five students were pregnant going by the signs of pregnancy they were showing and upon interrogation and health check, they were tested positive for pregnancy,” she said.
Bungoma East District Education Officer (DEO), Immaculate Obare said that she had received the pregnancy report and was looking for a way of dealing with it.

“I have received the communication from the school and my officers are on the ground to ascertain the cause of the high number of pregnancies,” she said.
She asked girls to avoid demands from men who try to lure them into early sex.
Bungoma County Women Representative, Dr. Reginalda Wanyonyi said the culprits should be held responsible and called on the Principal not to expel the victims so that they can complete their studies.
“We want the government to crack the whip on those responsible as they have been preying on young girls and putting them in family way. This is unwarranted at this age and time; let the responsible men be punished for cutting short the girls education,” she said.
Dr. Wanyonyi said that Bungoma East Sub-County has not been doing well in the national examinations according to the report by the education task force that was released recently and warned that if the trend continues, the report recommendations will not work.
The Girls Advocacy Initiative, a girls empowerment community based organization director, Rebecca Masibayi, called for the immediate arrest of the culprits.
“We cannot tolerate this ...it is barbaric because the future of the girls has already been tempered with,” she said.
He called on the concerned authority to arrest the culprits and ensure that they face the law so that it can act as a lesson to other men with such behavior.
