Seven school girls arrested in prostitution sting

21 February 2015, 18:17 Jackson Okata

Nakuru - Seven secondary school female students were on Friday night arrested at Salgaa trading center in a prostitution sting by police officers.

The seven were among several women who were nabbed by police officers after local leaders raised alarm over the increased number of school girls engaging in the trade at the trade center.

Three of the girls were arrested with their clients while the other four were found in the negotiation process with their prospective clients.

Confirming the arrests, Nakuru police boss, Bernard Kioko said that they also arrested a 50-year-old woman believed to be the leader of a ring which has been recruiting young girls into commercial sex business.

“Sex trade is very common at Salgaa because of the huge number of long distance truck drivers who park their trucks there and many underage girls have been lured into the business by their parents or under peer pressure,” said Kioko.

"Schools in the area have been complaining about the high number of girls dropping out to join the trade and the sad thing is that most of them end up being infected with HIV/AIDS," he added.

He said those arrested were as young as twelve years and some of them confessed to have been forced by their mothers to join the trade.

Kioko added that they also arrested the clients who were with the young girls together with other four sex workers and said they will be arraigned in court on Monday to face charges of child abuse and employing underage girls into sex work.
