Serem wants president to explain MCA car grant comments

25 March 2014, 20:22 William Korir

Nairobi - The chairperson of the Salaires and Renumeration Commission SRC Sarah Serem says that there is need for a clarification on the issue of car grants for Members of County Assemblies, MCAs.

Serem says that there is need for the president to explain clearly what he meant in stating that the MCAs be treated like other elected officials.

During a form for MCAs in Mombasa last week, president Kenyatta said that there was need for there to be fairness in the public age bill as regards elected officials.

He stated that the MCAs shoul be given equal car grants and loans as well as other facilities just like members of parliament.

Bu speaking on the matter Tuesday, Serem said thet there is need to onsider the sustainability of the publi wage bill before speaking on sich sensitive matters.

" We will need a clarification from the president on what he really said to the MCAs, she said during a conference in Ol Kalou.

" The importnace is to ensure that the publicwage bill allows development to continue and with what I have read in the meida, it is not possible, she added.

The MCAs have been in several run-ins with Serem and her team over the state of their renumeration which they have previously termed as too low.

They have downed thei tools on a number of occasions to try force their point home and with president Kenyatta's declaration in Mombasa, were set to earn even more.

This is despite calls by the president and government to ensure a leaner wage bill of which he himself and the cabinet took paycuts.
