Schoolgirl commits suicide after teacher read her love messages to class

08 June 2015, 09:26 Arap Yego

Nairobi - A form three student at Marindi Secondary School in Nyamira County committed suicide over the weekend after a teacher confiscated her phone and allegedly read out her love messages to other students.

The teenage girl jumped into a septic tank after the incident and was pronounced dead at a nearby medical facility where she was rushed for treatment.

Nyamira Police boss, Rico Ngare who spoke to journalists, confirmed the incident and said police have already started conducting investigations.

“The information we have is that the girl told her colleague that she will kill herself unless she got her confiscated phone back. But we are conducting investigations to ascertain what led her to take her own life,” said Ngare.

The incident comes a fortnight after a 13-year-old girl in Tacoma, Washington in USA committed suicide following a similar shaming incident by her father.

A humiliated Isabel Laxamana is said to have jumped off a highway overpass on Friday, May 29 after her father posted a video on YouTube in order to punish her for an unclear offense.

Isabel Laxamana’s death has send tongues wagging online and a website called http://www.justiceforizabel.com/  and Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/justiceforizabel has been set up in hopes of raising awareness over the possible dangers of publicly shaming young people.
