School guards injured in night raid

Two school night guards are nursing injuries at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Mweiga, Nyeri County, following an attack by thugs, police sources have reported.
The armed thugs attacked the duo guarding Mwiyogo High School at the wee hours of Sunday morning before making away with office equipment and foodstuffs.
The guards were rescued by villagers who responded to their distress call and rushed them to the infirmary.
The thugs who were allegedly armed with machetes and other crude weapons including a crowbar broke into the school principal’s office, stole computer monitors and later went to the store where they parted with gas cylinders and cooking fat.
The attack was the second in a period of one year since the institution was also raided by thugs at the end of last year, in an incident that also left guards injured. They later resigned from the job.
However, locals are reportedly afraid of taking security guard jobs in the school due to the numerous attacks experienced in the recent past. As a result, the school management is forced to hire them from neighboring counties like Laikipia.
The school management had been given Administration Police (AP) officers who were charged with patrolling the institution but they were later withdrawn.
Residents have been complaining of the upsurging insecurity cases in the region saying thugs are also targeting residential homes.
