Nairobi - A dormitory in Kapsokwony High School, in Mt Elgon District on Sunday night was reduced to ashes after it caught fire in what is suspected to be an arson attack.
The schools principal Philip Kones who spoke to journalists ,said nothing was salvaged from the hostel which housed over 80 students. The students were attending their evening classes when the blaze tore through their dormitory.
“The students lost all the personal belongings and bedding in the inferno that occurred at around 7:30pm on Sunday,” said Kones.
The principal who estimated the combined monetary loss suffered by the school and students at almost KES 1million,appealed to well-wishers to intervene and assist the school to resurrect the structure.
He also appealed for humanitarian assistance to be accorded to affected students in the form of blankets, mattresses and learning materials to enable them to continue with their learning as usual.
Mt Elgon area OCPD John Onditi who rushed to the scene of the incident with his officers, said they have started investigations to find out the cause of the fire.
“We are not ruling out the possibility of an arson attack, as the incident can not be said to have been caused by an electric fault, as the lights were still on when the dormitory caught fire,” said the police boss.
