Nairobi - The Westgate Mall incident a year ago this week was a chilling experience for many, including survivors who have not yet got over the incident.
Godfrey Muriuki was at the mall on the day the attack took place, surviving after hiding under his car in the basement parking.
He was there to pick up a client and remembers the Saturday like it happened yesterday.
" It is a reminder of just how much life is a mystery, he says.
" I was sat in the car, then I stepped out to look underneath and check on a previous oil leak then I heard gunshots and people screaming so I immediately hid under my car ", Muriuki remembers.

The gunmen passed next to his vehicle, shooting indiscriminately at anyone they saw.
" I rolled to the other end of the car because it was darker and the could not see me easily. I just said my prayers all the time.
" It was inhuman. I remember them just shooting and shooting for long. They did not forgive innocent people ", he added.
He says that he had been denied entry to the upper tier level of parking because there was an event ongoing and it was full, so he had to go elsewhere.

" They denied me entry because there was an event there and that saved my life because most of those up there died, he said.
He says that he still has nightmares of the incident.
" I see the blood and the smell of death at times. The fact that time has passed by has helped but it is not easy for me to sleep I have had to go for counseling sessions to deal with it, he says.
His parting shot.
" Happy to be alive.
