Busia - Mobile service provider Safaricom has unveiled plans to construct computer laboratories for one school in each of the 47 counties at a cost of about KES 75 million.
In the agreement with the beneficiary schools, the company is expected to provide half the funds while the schools will raise the remaining balance.
“Safaricom will produce KES 800 000 while the beneficiary schools will raise the other KES 0.8M so that we can come up with a computer lab that will help learners to be educated on ICT,” said the Safaricom Service Desk Engineer, Prisca Namatsi.
Speaking in Amoni Primary school in Teso north constituency during the launch on Sunday, Namatsi said that it was under the program dubbed 47IN1 where they were trying to take ICT to rural communities around the country.

She added that currently there were teams moving around trying to raise money for schools through the selling of T-Shirts and calendars in order to raise funds for the schools.
“As a company, we are raising half the cost to build the computer laboratories and thus we will only release the funds after the community has raised their share in order to start the construction,” said Namatsi.
Teso North CDF chair, Sammy Ikwaras said they were keen on helping the school and the community achieve the target.
“We want to see this project succeed and thus we will see what the community will manage to raise during the harambee and the balance would be offset by the CDF committee,” said Ikwaras.
