Safaricom sues blogger for defamation

24 June 2015, 18:37 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - Mobile cellular service provider Safaricom has sued a local blogger for defaming the multi billion shilling company.

The company Wednesday issued court summons for popular blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, accusing him of spreading malicious word about the company on social media.

The company in paid adverts on local dailies, stated that Nyakundi had done his best to defame the company by portraying it in bad light to Kenyans.

Safaricom states that the blogger has begun a 15-part expose on their operations that portrays the company as ‘a thief and a fraud, obtaining money and airtime from its subscribers through non-existent subscriptions’.

In the case filed by Ogeto, Otachi and Company Advocates, Safaricom complains about an article titled Your Privacy and Safaricom are two different worlds.

Safaricom further alleges that Nyakundi accused them of firing their staff for falling ill and that the articles he published relate to matters already in court.

Nyakundi though, reacting on social media site Twitter, said that he would not stop his mission of ensuring Kenyans are treated with the respect they deserve.

" According to the court, I should not publish anything about Safaricom on My Blog (Assuming I have one and they can prove) I will abide".

" Putting info about the case in the media is meant to intimidate me. Meant to silence me, meant to make me look guilty".

" It is sad that Safaricom wants everyone to be silent . If you lose your 3 shillings to third parties and question you are sued!".

" It is heartbreaking that Kenyans have been suffering for a long time and anybody who raises a voice is arm twisted , that must stop".

" Bloggers and social media users are the only ones who can highlight the plight of Kenyans suffering due to greed of corporations. Not media," he stated.

It is not the first time Nyakundi has had a run-in with the law, having been allegedly thrown out of a local University for similar actions.
