Rigging allegations disrupt vote tallying

05 March 2013, 16:55Wangui Joseph

As vote tallying continued countrywide, the process was interrupted for about an hour following rigging claims at CDF hall in Othaya Constituency.

The incident occurred when a strange man who entered the hall carrying some documents went direct to where vote-counting was going on.

Political party and candidates’ agents claimed that the man was carrying votes which were to be counted in favour of a certain aspirant.

Confrontations ensued as agents demanded to know about the man and how he gained access to the room.

The centre presiding officer said he was an IEBC officer only that he had not worn the commission’s tag.

“Initially, he had a badge but maybe because of tiredness and long working hours he removed the tag. He is one of us,” said the presiding officer.

Police came to calm the situation and tallying resumed.

However, Peter King’ara, a GNU candidate in the constituency demanded that votes from five polling centres be recounted to ensure fairness and rebuild trust.

The presiding officer said if a candidate feels uncomfortable or takes the results as incredible, they should take a legal action.
