Return of TV stations set for more controversy

04 March 2015, 16:00 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - The return of four local TV stations that have been off air is set for more controversy as they claim they will only be on air on free to air platforms.

The TV stations announced Tuesday that they would make their return on air Thursday in Nairobi and the rest of the country a week later on digital platforms.

The announcement ended a three week standoff between them and the Communications Authority of Kenya CA over their insistence to remain on analogue signal for an extended period of time.

But in another twist, the stations, who will go under the banner of African Digital Network ADN also announced that they would only appear on free to air platforms.

This they say, will force pay TV firms such as Star Times, GOtv, Zuku and DSTV to either ensure their channels remain available even if customers have not paid their monthly bills or pay for their content.

The move, if effected will once again bring the TV stations in focus from members of the public as well as the government and the CA.

The CA has insisted that all free to air stations must be available to all digital platforms by law.

The stations though insist that their content costs money to front and thus they must too be protected.

" We just want our content to be protected by the government. We would like fair playing grounds for Kenyans. Why should our content be misused while at the same time for other stations it cannot," Wilfred Kiboro, the current chairman of the Nation Media Group told a parliamentary Committee last week.

It will make for interesting viewing Thursday at 6.50 PM.
