Police officers in Malindi have arrested a retired administration police officer for allegedly defiling a minor at Jilore area in Malindi district within Kilifi County.
The retired officer was arrested at his home after he had gone hiding for quite some time shortly after committing the crime.
According to Malindi deputy police boss Samson Ogero, the man aged 70 years old had defiled a 12 year old girl before disappearing.
He said the mother of the girl reported the matter to Malindi police station where investigations was launched to arrest the culprit.
Ogero said the police officers got a tip off of the whereabouts of the suspect where they surrounded his homestead and arrested him in his house.
He said the arrest of the suspect was made easier because police got information earlier, calling on residents to continue cooperating with police in a move to curb such behaviors in the area.
“If such reports are made early enough to our stations then it becomes easier for our officers tracing suspects and arrest them,” he added.
The suspect, will be arraigned in court on Monday to face a charge of a sexual offence contrary to the law of Kenya.
Meanwhile a body of a one day old child was found dumped on the roadside at Mbuyu wa Kusema along Malindi Sala Gate road in Malindi district.
The minor is said to have been given birth by her mother who later abandoned her on the same day.
Malindi district officer Josephine Njenga said the minor might have given birth by woman from other areas and deiced to abandon her in the area.
“This child might even have been taken from far away to here so that evidence and the owner is not easily known but the person who did this did it intentionally,” said DO Njenga.
She said police officers in the area are looking for the woman who abandoned the deceased child.
The body of the deceased minor Njenga said was taken to Star Mortuary.
