Residents threaten to kill rogue hippo

Residents of Bate village in Magarini district within Kilifi County have threatened to kill an hippopotamus that they claim is terrorising them day and night.
They claim the rogue hippo has forced them to suspend most of the activities during the day since it is always on the move making it difficult for them to access their farms.
"If the animal is not driven out of this area so that we can continue with our activities, let the government know that we will kill it," said a local resident who refused to be named.
Area chief Mwambaru Kalama said the wild animal has been terrorising local residents for the last two weeks.
“Locals are not able to walk around because the animal moves from one area to another and it is dangerous to human beings,” he said.
Addressing the media in Malindi, Kalama said that the hippos were initially two but KWS killed one recently.
The chief added that the animal has also been destroying crops in farms, a move he noted may contribute to lack of food in the area if the government does not act immediately.
However, Malindi district KWS officer in charge Isaac Mugo said he has not yet received information regarding the wild animal terrorising locals in the area.
He said that his officers will trace the animal and move it to its place so that locals can live without fear and continue with their daily activities.
“If there is anything of that sort then I will contact my officers at the area so that they can move there and take animal out from the area,” said the KWS officer.
