Residents loot sugar as truck overturns, catches fire

Nakuru - Residents of Salgaa trading centre and its environs went to a looting spree after a sugar truck overturned near Salgaa Bridge along the Eldoret-Nakuru highway before catching fire.
According to an eyewitness, Moses Barasa, the trailer developed brake hitches along the Kibunja-Salgaa black spot before the driver decided to swerve, landing on the roadside where the trailer’s battery developed a caught fire.
Drama ensued when news spread to the neighbouring, causing residents to swarm the scene to loot sugar that was destined for Gilani supermarket in Nakuru.
The rowdy crowd managed to loot over 75 percent of the load before the police arrived.
Barasa said the residents swarmed the truck hauling bags of sugar away to the nearby bushes, while others fought to enter the smoke-filled truck.
“I must first of all congratulate the trailer’s driver for the intelligent decision he made to swerve to the roadside since this helped save hundreds of lives of passengers aboard PSVs in Salgaa trading centre,” said Barasa.
Police had to use force to scatter the looters.
“We were forced to use batons, sticks and whips to repulse the rowdy crowd,” said Rongai OCS Chief Inspector, Erick Njue.
The incident comes just a day after a grisly accident involving a trailer and Nissan Matatu at the same highway killed 11 people.
