Residents enact community policing

17 January 2013, 16:39Kelvin Mureithi

Magundu villagers in Imenti North District have resolved to improvise their own security mechanism to protect themselves and their property from law violators.

The villagers said they had lost confidence in those entrusted with the responsibility of enforcing the law for purposes of keeping law and order in the area.

Speaking  to the media in Meru, one of the villagers alleged that security personnel covering the area were being compromised by those involved in social vices such as illegal brewing of alcoholic substances and selling of other dangerous drugs such as bhang among the youth.

The villager who identified himself as Kiambi also alleged that youths were being lured out of school by those in the illegal businesses to assist them sell the substances at a very meager pay or no pay at all.

Some of the young boys and girls end up drinking the illicit brews and smoking the bhang as their payment from their bosses.

The villagers have declared war against any idling youths who incorporate loitering strangers to the village and spend most of their times hanging around at the village kiosks and canteens.

They also cautioned everybody against engaging strangers as farm boys without demanding a photocopy of their national  identity cards or other official identification documents so as to ensure such people were easily traced in case of any criminal suspicions.

It was also alleged that some of the people appointed to assist the local provincial administration safeguard public security at the village level were equally a liability as they were said to have colluded with the security personnel in demanding for protection fees from those engaged in activities deemed to be against the law of the land.

The villagers elected a number of people to act as the village surveillance group in liaison with the local assistant chief who assured them of official support as long as their activities were within the law and concept of community policing.
