Residents demonstrate over attacks

20 February 2013, 14:04 Kelvin Wanjohi

Transport was paralysed for close to 7 hours along the Nyahururu - Maralal road on Wednesday after residents blocked the road at Maili Saba from 3 Am, following the killing of three people by bandits in the last one week.

According to the residents, the gang involved in the spate of killings allegedly has connections with some ‘rogue officers’ and are just trigger happy fellows with no respect for life.

Among those murdered include two drivers plying the route and a resident who was stabbed at Muhotetu shopping center in Laikipia West.

An expectant woman who developed labour pains at the scene due to the snarl up was assisted to walk from one end of the long convoy of vehicles to the other to be taken to Nyahururu district Hospital.

Nyahururu District Commissioner arrived at the scene accompanied by administration police commandant in Nyahururu district Dainel Masaba, but their efforts to control the situation were futile.

The residents demanded the transfer of police officers who have stayed in the area for over three years, some of whom have already invested in the matatu and boda boda businesses.

They demanded that the motor cycle taxis stop operating beyond eight o’clock since some crimes were committed by people who escaped using motorcycles.

They also called for the upgrade of the local police post to a full police station complete with a sniffer dog.
