Residents block Mai Mahiu- Narok road over insecurity

07 June 2014, 17:58 William Korir

Nairobi - Hundreds of youths blocked the Mai Mahiu- Narok road to protest over rising cases of insecurity in the region.

The youths took over the busy highway, at Ntulele area barricading it with stones and in the process causing a long traffic snarl-up.

They were protesting police laxity in handling cases of insecurity and called on the men in blue to react faster to calls for help and general insecurity.

Police were dispatched to the scene but the 20 or so who arrived at the scene were easily outnumbered and could not quell the protests.

" Police have been asleep and we have thus seen a high increase in cases of insecurity, Isaac Mwangi, one of the protesters at the scene said.

Others claimed that the police were colluding with criminals seeing as they had pointed out a number of criminals to the police with no action taken.

" They are colluding because some of the criminals are well known and so you cannot explain the slow reaction by the police, James Njihia, a Boda Boda operator said.

The youth were later on addressed by area OCPD Paul Leting, who promised to give them an audience only if they cleared the road.

" Please please. Clear the road first and then we can talk, Leting pleaded.

Many travelers including tourists heading to the nearby Maasai Mara game reserve were stranded at the scene for hours due to the protests.

Insecurity has been a bone of contention for area residents, who not for the first time have taken to the streets to protest over the worsening state of insecurity which has seen lives lost and property burgled.
