Renovation of Waa Girls Rescue Centre going on

31 October 2014, 22:59 John

Kwale - Kwale County Children Coordinator Stephen Gitau said that renovation of Waa Girls Rescue Centre is undergoing.

Gitau said they are renovating the center in collaboration with Plan International Kwale.

He said the center will accommodate needy girls in the County following lack of such children’s home.

Gitau said several children cases of vulnerable children especially girls have reported in the area.

“Due to lack of such rescue centre the children department was in uncomfortable situation to ensure the destitute children are safe,” he said.

Gitau said that there is need for all stakeholders whether governmental or non-governmental to apply professionalism while handling child abuse cases.

He said needy children need to be assisted instead of being frustrated.

The children officer made eth remarks during one day training on case management organized by the department of children in the Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Services in collaboration with Plan International Kwale Program Unit at a Diani Hotel on Thursday.

“The way some cases are handled was not the right because mostly result to their termination before being concluded legally. Sorting out children cases in kangaroo court is not good,” he added.

He observed that sometimes those cases are handled in such manner that those handling them end up confusing each other.

“It is high time that everyone should know his or her mandate and operate within them so that children can get their justice” he noted.

Gitau said that there is a need for a County Case Management team to be formed and also have sub-County committees to ensure the welfare of the child is well protected.
