Relying too much on technology
17 October 2011, 12:05
How sad have we become that we are so heavily reliant on cellphones, e-mails and the internet. The moment something doesn’t work or a webpage takes too long to open, we immediately jump up and down and scream and shout and our service providers.
How sad that we cannot communicate something to one of our colleagues that possibly sits in the same office or building because our e-mails are down. What did we do before the invention of cellphones, e-mails and internet? We got off our lazy behinds and did something about it.
Life was simpler, it was less complicated. Has modern technology made us a paralysed society; has it crippled our social being? We are so busy SMSing or BBMing, Googling, WhatsApping and inboxing each other, what do these words even mean and it just rolls off our tongues.
How is it that you will see a group of teenagers coming out of a movie and the first this the do is SMS their mates or update their face book status when the person or people they have just been into the movie theatre with are standing right next to them, then they get an update on their BlackBerries to tell them the movie they have just seen together I may add was SIC!
What does that even mean, possibly this may seem archaic or even old-fashioned but what happened to sitting down over an ice-cream or a cup of coffee and discussing something. No, we are too busy checking for updates and SMSing the people that we should rather be talking to.
We are so afraid that we have a paper trail of things that we have done or requested that we become neurotic about ensuring this. What happened to trust, what happened to plain and simple taking, conversing, discussing or just sitting and allowing to world to go by? It is so scary that you can even read a book on an iPad. Where did all the paperback and hardcover novels and children’s story books go.
Even this letter has been typed on a computer with a fancy operating system and will be spell checked automatically and e-mailed. When was the last time you wrote I mean physically wrote a letter to someone, switched off your cellphone and TV and just sat and listened?
We are all guilty of all the above and will continue to do this because this is the way we have evolved and things will continue to get even more technical and advance and become “simpler” yet more impersonal. The more we try to simplify our lives and the way we live the more distant we become from each other.
Do yourselves a favour switch off even if it’s for 10 minutes and just listen! Watch the world go by and allow yourself to breathe deeply filling your lungs with the precious gift of fresh air it’s free!
