Registration of persons to be enhanced in Nyanza

Kisumu - The County Civil Registrar Hesbon Odhiambo has announced a Rapid Response Initiative (RRI) spearheaded by the Directorate of Immigration and Registration of Persons scheduled to take place from this month across the county.
Odhiambo noted that the RRI was necessary considering that only 48 per cent of births in Nyanza region were registered as compared to a national average rate of 55 per cent.
The initiative, he added, was aimed at capturing unregistered births and missing information of registered births.
Speaking at a regional RRI sensitization workshop in Kisumu, Odhiambo said the exercise was targeting all people below 18years.
He pointed out that cultural beliefs, reluctance to take up duties and home delivery of babies in some parts of Nyanza region were factors that make the region have a low birth registration rate in view of the national average.
Odhiambo said assistant chiefs would be equipped with registration material to carry out the exercise.
He said the captured data will be used to establish a universal single registration system activated at birth which will streamline national ID registration, passport registration, refugee registration, voter registration, NHIF, NSSF and other tax or commercial registration.
Odhiambo added that the mop up exercise is also aimed at complying with the constitution and conforming to global best practices on registration of births and deaths.
The workshop was attended by County Commissioners, registration of birth and death and immigration officials from Nyanza region.
