Recce squad officers quit, up for hire

02 September 2015, 17:13 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - GSU Recce squad members are quitting in an alarming manner, News24 has learnt, with private businesses first on the line to pick up their services.

The highly trained officers are quitting for a variety of reasons, with most complaining about the poor pay and lack of allowances.

They are also complaining about the lack of facilities in terms of their living standards and general life.

Some have thus left the organization and are now headed for Private security firm jobs where they will get better pay.

" It is bad. Many officers have left the organization and are out there earning well. Many others are also looking to leave," an officer that did not wish to be named said.

Others claimed that they had been frustrated over payment for contracts they had done had been denied.

" We have not been paid for a number of contracts, especially the one where President Barack Obama came to the country," another officer said.

A call to GSU headquarters was not answered, with a source at the GSU Commander's office saying that he was not around for comment.

Recce squad officers are highly trained in the United States and Israel and security analysts fear that their services could be used by terrorists looking to have their skill level on board.

" This is scary as it may lead to officers leaving and heading into the lap of terrorists which is something we should be very worried about," security expert Chrispine Owalo told News24.

" Imagine how much they would rejoice in getting such skilled personnel among their ranks. It would be a tragedy," he added.
