Nyeri - Kenya is set to host Africa Olympics qualifiers in canoeing and kayaking come November this year.
Participants from about 15 countries will converge at Rapids Camp along river Sagana between November 2 and November 10 to select those who will represent various countries in Olympics games that will be held in Brazil next year.
Kenya Rowing and Canoe Association Secretary General, Seif Patwa said the Kenyan paddlers have been practicing in preparation for the qualifier, saying they are committed to see the country represented in canoeing slalom and rafting sports in Brazil.
Patwa, who was speaking Monday after a national canoe championship held in Sagana, said the country is not exploiting its potential in the sport which is still not popular.
He said before the paddlers are allowed to participate in the Olympics, they are required to participate in the world championship games which will be held in London in August and hoped the country will send some paddlers to the event.
“For us to participate in Olympics, our players are supposed to take part in world championship games which act as a mentorship event for the participants,” said the secretary general who is also a senior official in the Africa Canoe Association.
He called for support from the government saying the sport has not been funded like other sports.
