Ranch workers accused of colluding with cattle rustlers

18 December 2013, 11:53 James Kabotia

Laikipia - A section of residents in Daiga division in Laikipia County are blaming workers of a local ranch of colluding with cattle rustlers.

The residents of Nginyai village have said that the workers were working in cahoots with cattle rustlers from a neighboring County in stealing their livestock and hiding them in Lolldaiga ranch before they drive them away.

Following the accusations, Laikipia County Administration Police Commander, Moses Muriithi said he will meet with the management of the ranch very soon to discuss the issue.

Speaking at Nginyai AP police post, Muriithi said that additional police officers would also be deployed in the area to seal all the routes used by cattle rustlers.

The residents told the AP Commander during the security meeting that the criminals were stealing their livestock and hiding them in caves inside the expansive ranch.

However, they said the managers of the ranch might not be aware of their workers’ criminal activities, but investigations ought to be done.

Samson Weru, who is a resident, said, “Whenever these workers bring the ranch cattle to graze near this village, cases of cattle rustling are witnessed. They drive the stolen animals into caves of the inaccessible mountains. This time of the year is normally the worst.”

They said the government should give them guns like the Kenya police reservists to counter the vice.

In a quick rejoinder, the police boss rejected the idea saying more police officers will be deployed and patrols enhanced in the area.

“There is no need to give you guns when there is extra security personnel and better communication. Look for ways to build permanent offices for our officers and I’ll bring in more officers,” said Muriithi.

Muriithi promised to meet the management of the ranch and see if they can vet the workers.

He told the residents to hand over the title deeds of the public utility land that has been set aside for police posts to the government to enable it to plan and develop the police posts.

The AP commander also promised residents of adequate security during this festive season.
