Raila chose Kajwang for Homa Bay seat

29 December 2014, 13:30 William Korir

Nairobi - It is understood that ODM leader Raila Odinga himself chose Moses Kajwang as candidate for the Homa Bay Senatorial seat.

The nomination of Kajwang to represent the party in the February by elections has caused chaos and division within the Orange party with many understood to be unhappy over the choice to vie for the seat.

But according to sources within the party, Raila himself vouched for the younger Kajwang despite opposition from key lieutenants.

" He was told that there would be issues if he went with Moses but he insisted it was the right choice," the source at Orange House that did not want to be named told News24.

Most were keen on having Raila's former aide Silas Ouko Jakakimba run for the seat but Raila overruled them.

" Jakakakimba was the obvious choice but the top brass decided against it," the source added.

ODM has been under pressure since the Kajwang nomination, with violent scenes witnessed in Homa Bay over the weekend during campaigns.

Jakakimba himself says that he is not part and parcel of the violence and has condemned it in its entirety.

" It is an expression of people's wants and needs and they have chosen that way. I do not condone it at all but the party has to read the mood of the people," he said of the fiasco.

The by elections will be held February 12, 2014.
