Raila, 50 MPs set for Bungoma visit

28 August 2015, 17:38 William Korir

Nairobi - CORD leader Raila Odinga will take his team to Bungoma County Saturday.

In order to give enough time to farmers in the sugarcane growing region of Western Kenya and to get to listen to their plight, the CORD leadership has dedicated Saturday to Bungoma County where several consultative forums with the farmers have been scheduled.

CORD principals Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula will use their trip to Bungoma County to engage with the farmers, listen to them and understand the problems they are facing in relation to the current problems facing the Sugar Industry.

The trip comes in the wake of revelation that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Ugandan Counterpart Yoweri Museveni led high level government delegations from the two countries to the signing of a Sugar Deal that would allow Uganda to export the commodity to Kenya.

In the deal, Uganda is expected to export to Kenya about 79,000 tonnes of sugar which will be sold cheaply in the local market in exchange with meat and dairy products (from Kenya). The consequences of the deal, according to CORD are grave to the country’s sugarcane farmer and the local industry which will effectively collapse and millions of Kenyans lose their livelihoods.

The programme for the day will see the leaders hold a mini rally at the Bungoma Bus Park at 1.30 Pm, before heading to Kanduyi Shopping Centre for another rally at 2.15. They will then hold a major public rally at Bukembe market, which hosts the Nzoia Sugar Company LTD.

50 members of Parliament as well as leaders from the Senate have confirmed their presence.
