Sheikh Ali Bahero is alleged to have been attacked by a group of radical youth near the former Masjid Musa now renamed Masjid Shuhada for allegedly being against the teachings of the late controversial Muslim cleric Aboud Rogo.
Mombasa police boss, Geoffrey Mayek said that police are in pursuit of the attackers.
“We are in pursuit of the radical youth who attacked the Sheikh claiming that his teaching were against radicalization,” said Mayek.
It is alleged that the Sheikh was attacked on his way home from madrasa, when a group of unknown youth attacked him before disappearing.
The Sheikh was rushed to Jocham hospital were he is recuperating from the head injuries he sustained in the attack.
The attacks come only a month after the raid of masjid musa to weed out radicalized youth who were alleged to have strong ties with the Al Shabaab.
The group has been accused of recruiting youth to join Al Shabaab war in Somalia.
