Pupil falls to death during playtime

16 August 2013, 14:04 Arap Yego

A standard eight pupil from Sambocho Village in Mt. Elgon constituency passed away after sustaining head injuries while playing with her colleagues at a school playground.

The girl, a pupil at Makunga Primary School, is said to have hit her head on a stone on Thursday mid morning, after tripping while participating in a hide and seek game with her schoolmates during break time.

She collapsed and passed out and later died as she was being rushed to Kapsokwony District Hospital for medical attention.

The school head teacher, Gladys Towett, blamed the unfortunate incident on lack of a playing ground at the school, which has forced pupils at the school to play on a rocky field thus endangering their lives.

She appealed to the Mt. Elgon CDF Committee and other well wishers to help the school acquire more land that can be converted to a playing field for the pupils as a way of averting similar incidences in the future.

Dr. Edward Simiyu, who conducted postmortem on the deceased body, told media that the cause of the girl’s death was intra-cerebral haemorrhage, which is caused by severe damage on the skull.

A dejected father, David Kiplagat, could not help but shed tears for her daughter whom he said left for school in perfect health.

He was however grateful to the officials from the local District Education Office for their speedy response to the tragedy including taking care of postmortem as well as transport expenses.
