Pupil dies after being punished for skipping class

Bungoma - A standard three pupil at Lugulu Primary School in Likuyani sub-County has died while another is nursing injuries at Likuyani hospital after they were caned for skipping classes.
Area assistant Chief, Wycliffe Masinde said the pupil died after being beaten by both the teacher and parents.
“The two pupils are said to have had a habit of skipping classes and teachers and parents were disciplining them before the tragedy happened,” Masinde said.

Police are investigating the matter while the deceased's body was taken to Kitale sub-county mortuary.
Likuyani sub-County Education Officer, David Mwandihi said his department is also investigating the incident before action is taken against the alleged suspects.
“Teachers who will be found admitting corporal punishment to students in contravention of education laws as stipulated in the constitution will be punished,” Mwandihi said.
