Prostitutes turn to robbery as client numbers plummet

Endebbe - Sex workers in Entebbe town, near the only international airport in the country, have of recent turned into robbers after running short of clients.
According to a security officer in Entebbe municipality, Benjamin Oketcho, the prostitutes mostly operate from two bars called Rida Pub and Spot bar, both located in the town centre.
''They mostly target white men and wealthy Ugandans who often visit those places. A good number of men have fallen prey to their antics,'' he narrated.
Oketcho said that there is likelihood that the prostitutes connive with bartenders to drug revelers who sit with them.
''After the men pass out, they take them to hotel rooms where they rob them clean,'' said Oketcho.
The victims reportedly end up oversleeping, even for two days only to wake up to empty wallets.

Authorities in the town have put in place a committee to investigate the activities of the prostitutes.
Entebbe district police commander, Eric Ninsiima, has said that they have received reports about sex workers stealing from men especially those who seduce them. He said that although at times they arrest the suspects, those who steal a lot of money from the whites disappear and go to live in other places.
''There are now many sex workers in Entebbe and they have become a threat to security,'' Ninsiima said.
He said that soon they will carry out operations to get rid of the sex workers.
But one of the sex workers, only identified as Sweetie, said that not all of them are thugs.
She said, ''There are some women who are thieves and pretend to be sex workers so they can rob the whites. We are ready to work with police to get rid of such women.''
