Kampala - Police in the eastern Uganda town of Jinja are holding 70 sex workers who were arrested last night during an operation over the illegal trade.
According to police, the sex workers have turned into robbers when they fail to get customers which has brought about insecurity in Jinja town.
The police officer who led the operation, Felix Mukibi said the operation was necessary to weed out evil from the town.
" We carried out an operation last night on Kuhch road and Nizam road where the sex workers operate. We arrested 70 and we will soon take them to court to be charged for being idle and disorderly in addition to practicing prostitution," he said.
He added that the sex workers later in the night resort to robbing on the streets or ganging up with core robbers and breaking into people's houses.
" After getting complaints from residents, we carried out the operation. Some of the sex workers have confessed that they have participated in robbery, " he added.
He said that there are also some bars where the sex workers operate from and they will soon mount operations in those places.
But the sex workers who fled from being arrested vowed that they will continue with their trade because they lack employment.
" That is where we earn our living. For the last five years that is how I have survived. We will continue doing our thing, one of the prostitutes Irene Mosi said.
