Pros and cons of replacing textbooks with laptops

12 August 2013, 15:16 Makokha Shadrack

Laptops are very powerful and effective learning and communication tools.

However, there are a number of aspects that should be considered before replacing textbooks with laptops in schools. Some of them include; the cost of implementing the project, portability, the ease with which they can be used and their effects on the visual capabilities of the users. Another aspect that needs to be considered is whether the students can learn well while using these gadgets.

With the ordinary books, a student is usually forced to carry around many books for learning. With the laptops, however, all the content is stored in one device, hence saving on space.

While using the laptops, there might be less or no need for a physical library or storage room for books. This is due to the fact that all the content is stored in the laptop and some of it can easily be accessed through virtual libraries or electronic books (eBooks).

It is also possible to have an online back-up for all the content and in case something happens to the books, all the information can easily be retrieved.

The content can also be accessed easily anytime without affecting the physical location of learner. Another benefit of a laptop is that it is easily portable and hence the learner does not find it cumbersome walking around with.

By using laptops, it is easier for learners to replace any outdated or incorrect information.

It is also worth noting that by using laptops, students can easily purchase and store eBooks hence saving on time unlike in the case of ordinary books where one has to place an order and wait for it to be delivered. There are also some sites for free eBooks as opposed to the ordinary books where each has a cost attached to it.

Replacing ordinary textbooks with laptops will also help in increasing computer literacy among students. This is due to the fact that students have access to the computers most of the time. This is quite important for the job market as employers will not be required to train their employees on certain computer skills. The fact that students at a younger age will be able to own such valuable gadgets will encourage them to become more responsible and hence nurture this virtue as they grow.

Some of the content will be presented in the multimedia form which will aid the students in grasping the various concepts. The student will also be able to highlight important points or add footnotes hence making revision easier. Accessing information electronically is easier than turning one page after another to get knowledge.

Using the laptops instead of ordinary textbooks has various disadvantages too. For instance, these gadgets are costly and expensive to maintain. In case of breakages, students might waste a lot of time and hence experience delays in accomplishing their assignments and projects.

Having laptops also requires one to be connected to the internet so as to access online content and other vital features hence extra cost must be incurred. They also require one to acquire many compatible programs so as to use them effectively. A student might also be tempted to plagiarize his/her work due to the availability of online content. Easy access to online content might also tempt some students to access pornographic sites as well as waste time on games at the expense of the academic work.

In conclusion, the benefits of laptops supersede their disadvantages as the learning process is greatly enhanced. The learning is collaborative and effective hence making such a program worth taking. Schools will greatly cut on the cost of purchasing textbooks and reduce the space needed for libraries. The program should therefore be adopted by various schools.
