Nyeri - An inmate at King’ong’o GK prison who attempted to escape last week was on Wednesday sentenced to three more years in prison by a Nyeri court.
John Wanyoike was serving a two-year-sentence for being in possession of bhang and had only four months remaining to complete the term.
He made a daring escape from prison only to be arrested hours later heading home in Mukurwe-ini constituency.
Wanyoike was arraigned before Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Wekesa where he admitted to the charge of escaping from custody on November 1.
Prosecutor Peter Wahome told the court that Wanyoike was found in a matatu at Mukurwe-ini.
At the time of his escape, he was working at the correctional facility’s coffee plantation alongside other inmates under supervision of sergeants Jasen Kanja and Alfred Kyule.
One of the warders supervising them noticed his absence and immediately raised alarm prompting his search.
He is said to have been half naked at the time of arrest after leaving his prison uniform in the farm.
