Kampala - Drama ensued at a burial ceremony last evening after a section of mourners beat up a priest forcing him to flee for his life, accusing him of under looking them and failure to respect the deceased.
The incident took place in Lwengo district, 200 kms west of Kampala.
The priest, Amon Nsube was beaten for reportedly refusing to pray for the deceased Kato Mwaga after the realtives failed to produce a baptism card and a letter from the priest showing that he had been attending church services in Masaka town, where he died.
''We did not have any letter from priests of Masaka where Mwaga died afer a short illness. And it is not easy to trace the baptism document since he was bapatized 34 years ago,'' said John Pande, one of the relatives of the deceased.
Pande said that after trying to explain to the priest who failed to give in, some mourners resorted to beating him up.
''I was against beating. I tried to stop people but they overwhelmed me,'' said Pande.
He said that after receiving a few slaps and kicks, the priest fled from his tormentors.
''Because he was in a long gown, he could not run easily. He fell several times as he fled,'' said Pande.
After the priest fled, a volunteer prayed for the dead and he was buried.
