Presidential aspirants told to campaigns on issues

05 June 2012, 14:23Oduor Omondi

Former Karachuonyo MP Phoebe Asiyo has called on all presidential candidates to base their campaigns on issues affecting the common mwananchi instead of ‘empty rhetoric’ that may divide the nation.

She said that all men and women yearning to become the country’s 4th President should be at the fore front in uniting Kenyans regardless of their ethnic backgrounds or perceived political loyalty.

Asiyo said negative ethnicity could make Kenya fall into the category of failed states just like other African countries that have disintegrated because of negative ethnicity and bad governance.

Revisiting the infamous 2007-2008 post poll chaos, Asiyo blamed it on the isolation of some communities which she said can only be avoided through good leadership.

Asiyo who is the Chairperson of the Caucus for Women’s Leadership also called on women to rise to the occasion by contesting for various leadership positions provided by the new constitution.

She also called for equal distribution of resources among all the regions in the country, saying that currently, there is some disparity in terms of government allocations.

“The imbalanced distribution of resources in the country is much despicable, that is why you go to regions like Turkana and you don’t believe you are in Kenya,” she said.

She at the same time called on all Kenyans to unite and serve the Country as members of one family, but not as members of different ethnic clusters.

Asiyo added that she is happy that the implementation of the new constitution is on the right track and urged the relevant stakeholders to ensure that it is implemented to the letter because all hopes and aspirations of Kenyans are based on it.
