Powerful forces, police behind illicit brews in Nakuru

15 August 2015, 08:59 Jackson Okata

Nairobi - A Member of Parliament from Nakuru County has said that powerful forces are behind the continued brewing and supply of illicit brews in the County.

Njoro MP, Joseph Kiuna said that police and senior businessmen in the County receive huge bribes from the dealers of the illicit brews to allow them to operate without fear of arrest.

Kiuna added that efforts to have the trade stopped have been met with resistance and also compromised.

“The reason why we have this illicit brew in Nakuru is because there are  some powerful forces behind it. They cannot be touched because they are buying their way out with money and it is difficult to get to them,” he said.

“Last week on Monday, we had a meeting with the County commissioner, Mohammed Birik, and we told him everything. He said he will act but up to now, nothing has happened so we will take action,” he continued.

He lamented over what he termed as laxity by the County government to join forces with other leaders in fighting the illicit brew menace in the County.
