13th march, 2012 went down as one of the most colourful days at Karenger School.
The school held a thanks giving ceremony to congratulate and thank all stake holders who enabled the school to perform better in the 2011 KCSE examinations.
The Karenger School, a district school, is located in west Pokot district, in Pokot county some 25 km from Makutano town. The school did well in the 2011 KCSE examinations, where they had a mean score of 9.1 where the last student had a C+ and emerged second Nationally, in the district schools category and was also second postion in Pokot County after Kapenguria Boys High school.
The event was graced by various dignitaries, led by Professor John Lonyang’apuo, The Ps Ministry of works; who is also the board chairman of the school, Professor Bitok – The deputy principal, Chepkoilel University College, Mary Lonyang’apuo, Micah Powon- MD Cotton, former Mp Samuel Moroto among others.
All the guests congratulated the teachers, the students who performed well and all the individuals who contributed to the good performance by the school. They urged the school to keep up the efforts and believe to realize even better results in the future.
The Karenger School principal, Philip Motor attributed their good performance to faith in God and hard work from teachers and students as well as commitment. Prof. Lonyang’apuo rewarded the best performers in the group by sponsoring a fully paid for trip to Nairobi National park, by air from Kitale town, and also to Lake Baringo as a show of recognition.
Four students recounted problems they had undergone before sitting for their final examinations, they had earlier dropped out of school for twelve years and had given up hope of ever acquiring secondary education, they had even gotten married like the case of Cheriot Kemboi and Stanley Biwott who graced the occasion with their wives, but with encouragement and support from professor Lonyang’apuo they went to school and performed well.
Leaders strongly condemned selfish individuals who were moving round and claiming that the performance by the school was not genuine but attributed it to cheating and irregularities in exams. They challenged such persons to come out in the open and substantiate their claims.
Politics could not be left out in such a function which had been graced by many aspirants for various seats in the coming general election. Professor Lonyang’apuo was endorsed as the rightful candidate to take up the mantle of being the senator of Pokot County in the coming general election. This was as a result of his good record development wise; as said by one aspirant, Mama Roda Rotino, for women’s representative.
There was outrage from the gathering when one speaker, advocating for one of the sitting Mp in Pokot county claimed that Professor Lonyang’apuo will be held responsible if he fails to intervene and stop the demarcation of Turkwel Gorge from Pokot county to Turkana south.
The speaker had to cut short his speech to go and sit down as the gathering was angry with him. He was informed that the sole responsibility lies with the current members of parliament in Pokot County, and not Lonyang’apuo, who is not a politician, but a civil servant like any other.
