Politicians ditch TNA

16 January 2013, 15:31

As February 17 nominations day draws closer many aspirants in central Kenya have already expressed their in-confidence with the TNA party primaries on various arguments while those sensing defeat defecting to other parties so as to remain in the race.

Nominations are perceived to shutter political dreams of many aspirants in case they lose at the party primaries.

TNA euphoria led many politicians both incumbent and aspirants fall over themselves to join the party (TNA) that they believed will bag them victory after nominations.

Some politicians ended up opening TNA party offices in their regions to portray themselves as loyal as Uhuru’s point men in their respective areas.

However, despite TNA party's assurance that their primaries will be transparent, free, fair and credible, defection from the party has been witnessed.

Recently in Murang’a County, it took the officials to denounce accusations that some aspirants have party nomination certificates in their pockets alleging to have been directly nominated.

Allegedly, various aspirants were to decamp to Peter Kenneth’s Kenya National Congress Party (KNC) and others to Grand National Union (GNU) headed by public works assistant Minister Mwangi Kiunjuri.

It took the area party chairman Simon Muchoki to convince the aspirants and assure them that all was well.

In Nakuru County, a man who was expected to represent TNA in Nakuru West constituency later defected to ODM arguing that he wanted a party that is open to all and one that enhances confidentiality.

Samuel Arama approached ODM officials asking to be allowed to join the party.

Nevertheless, TNA had also been accused of rogue listing of members without their will and knowledge.

In Nyeri county voters are said to be in a dilemma on which party to vote for between Uhuru’s TNA and influential area governor aspirant Nderitu Gachagua’s GNU.

Gachagua and his affiliates had been receiving calsl from DPM urging them to disband the party and join TNA to portray regional unity but they desisted.

GNU party leader Mwangi Kiunjuri argued that Uhuru should let voters in central Kenya to elect a candidate of their choice regardless of their party affiliation.

Kiunjuri said his party will field candidates to face TNA aspirants in all positions except presidency.
